Following on from LibrarianMeg — and this may be the naive question:

How people are distinguishing a supplier having a bad batch from a supplier on the way out?

The answer turned out to depend on the detail I had left out of the opening post, which is a lesson about how to ask rather than about the subject.

Pushing back on chris_chi24 here. Not convinced. The evidence being cited is consistent with the conclusion and also consistent with two other conclusions nobody has ruled out.

Agreeing with chris_chi24, and the qualification matters more than the agreement. Yes, and the corollary is less popular: if the reasoning holds, it also holds where it produces an answer we do not like.

Worth separating that from vendor vetting, which this thread keeps folding into the same question. They behave differently and the advice does not transfer.

Thank you — that is the clearest version of this I have read, and I have read a lot of them. Adding it to my notes with a link back to this thread.

Clinical perspective, offered as context rather than as advice. There is a difference between no evidence and evidence of no effect, and this subject is one where the two get swapped freely in both directions.
