On a suppressed appetite the winning strategy is protein density per unit of volume, not per calorie.

DEXA scan update relevant to protein intake:

Scanned at months 0, 6, and 12. Here are the body comp numbers:

BaselineMonth 6Month 12
Total mass258 lbs228 lbs205 lbs
Fat mass108 lbs78 lbs55 lbs
Lean mass161 lbs145 lbs152 lbs
Body fat %43%31%24%

Lean mass preserved — actually GAINED 1-2 lbs thanks to progressive overload + 1.5g/kg protein. The protein intake discussion needs to include body comp data, not just scale weight.

Following on from rachel_ABQ — and this may be the naive question:

Whether the RDA is the wrong reference entirely during rapid weight loss, and what the actual target should be?

Coming at Dr.PathRoch’s question from a different direction. Whatever the answer turns out to be, the method for getting there is the same: state the assumption, do the arithmetic in public, and invite the correction. That is slower than asserting, and it is the only version that survives being wrong.

Reporting back.

Update: two thirds of the target before midday. Same total, same appetite, and I am hitting it most days now.

True, and anyone with reduced kidney function needs that target set by a clinician rather than a forum. High protein is safe in normal kidneys and is not automatically safe in impaired ones.

Happy to go further on any of that.
