One concrete data point for the thread. The three that fix most of it: room temperature, let the alcohol dry fully, and rotate quadrants rather than points.

One thing that is still open after pete_nash’s answer:

Whether site reactions are a material issue or a technique issue, and what people changed that actually helped?

Adding the part of the answer the thread has not reached. Whatever the answer turns out to be, the method for getting there is the same: state the assumption, do the arithmetic in public, and invite the correction. That is slower than asserting, and it is the only version that survives being wrong.

OP back with an update, since a thread like this is useless without one.

Update, and it is the boring outcome: nothing was wrong. The measurement I was reading had moved less than its own week-to-week variation, which somebody said upthread and I did not believe.

Correct, and worth adding that it is reversible. Nothing being described here is a one-way door, which changes how cautious it is reasonable to be.

Worth separating that from injection-site reactions, which this thread keeps folding into the same question. They behave differently and the advice does not transfer.
