Two litres a day, no added salt, and a persistent headache that I spent a month attributing to the medication.

The test is quick: add fluid and salt for two days and see whether the symptom goes. If it does not, it was not hydration and it is worth a panel.

So the question, as narrowly as I can put it: why hydration goes wrong on this specifically, given that nobody is telling us to drink less.

I have searched first, so if this is covered somewhere point me at it and I will read it.

Helpful anti-nausea foods for hydration users:

  • Ginger (tea, chews, supplements — all work)
  • Peppermint (tea or oil capsules)
  • Plain crackers or rice cakes
  • Bananas (easy to digest, replenish potassium)
  • Clear broth (hydration + sodium)
  • Small amounts of protein (chicken breast, plain Greek yogurt)

Avoid: greasy foods, spicy foods, large meals, lying down after eating. Keep meals small and frequent — I do 5-6 mini meals/day.

Muscle cramps on hydration — anyone else? I was getting severe leg cramps at night, especially calves. Bloodwork showed my both mag and potassium was low.

GLP-1 agonists can cause electrolyte shifts due to reduced food intake and GI effects. Get your electrolytes checked and supplement accordingly. I take magnesium glycinate 400mg + potassium gluconate 99mg daily and cramps are gone.

Same experience, arrived at from the opposite direction. Posting only so the count is not one.

Adding the clinical framing, because it changes how the question reads.

Electrolyte monitoring on hydration — especially important during early titration when GI effects are most pronounced:

  • Sodium: 138 mEq/L (normal, but was low at week 2 from vomiting)
  • Potassium: 4.2 mEq/L (supplement if below 3.5)
  • Magnesium: 1.8 mg/dL (supplementing with glycinate)
  • Phosphorus: 3.6 mg/dL (normal)

Low electrolytes cause muscle cramps, heart palpitations, and fatigue — symptoms often blamed on the medication itself. Check your levels before assuming it's a drug side effect.
