There is a difference between no evidence and evidence of no effect, and this subject is one where the two get swapped freely in both directions.

Coming at rachel_ABQ’s question from a different direction. If two explanations both fit, the useful question is which one predicts something the other does not. That is answerable; arguing about which sounds more plausible is not.

Adding the numbers, since they settle part of this. If you are comparing against somebody else’s result, check that you are comparing the same measurement taken the same way. Most of the apparent contradictions in these threads dissolve at that step.

That is the short version; the long version is somebody else's post.

Following on from rachel_ABQ — and this may be the naive question:

How long did you give it before you decided it was working?

I read this differently. The confidence in this thread is running ahead of the evidence, and I would rather the uncertainty were stated than smoothed over because it is unsatisfying.

Agreeing with dave_SLC, and the qualification matters more than the agreement. Yes, and the corollary is less popular: if the reasoning holds, it also holds where it produces an answer we do not like.
