There is a second half to this that has not been said yet. It is worth asking what the claim would look like if it were false. If nothing would look different, it is not a claim about the world and no amount of discussion will settle it.

Found this through search years later and it is still the best discussion of the question, so adding one thing. Say what you would expect to see if you were wrong, before you look. It is a small discipline and it changes what you notice.

How long did you give it before you decided it was working?

I read this differently from MaxMetOK, on substance rather than tone. Pushing back on the anecdote-stacking. Twenty people reporting the same thing is twenty samples from the same self-selected pool, not twenty independent confirmations.

Correct, and worth adding that it is reversible. Nothing being described here is a one-way door, which changes how cautious it is reasonable to be.
