United Healthcare PA criteria for Wegovy — 12 month update

A few more options people miss:

NeedyMeds.org — aggregates discount programs, and sometimes has Wegovy-specific coupons beyond the official savings card. Check there monthly because new programs appear.

Your employer's EAP or health advocacy service — many large employers contract with companies like Accolade or Health kevin_tulsa. These services have dedicated pharmacy navigators who can find additional savings or negotiate with the PBM on your behalf. Totally free to you.

PAN Foundation and HealthWell Foundation — these are independent nonprofits that sometimes open funding rounds for obesity medications. They open and close quickly, so set up alerts. When open, they can cover $3,000-6,000/year in copays.

At $78K income, you're right at the edge for some of these programs. Always apply — the worst they can say is no.

One more nuclear option: ask your doctor about switching to Zepbound. I know it's a different medication (tirzepatide, not semaglutide), but Lilly's savings card for Zepbound currently has a $550/month cap with no annual maximum for commercially insured patients. Even if your insurance doesn't cover it at all, you'd pay $550 vs $489 for Wegovy — basically the same, but the savings card lasts indefinitely.

Some patients actually come out ahead switching because Lilly is being more aggressive with their copay support right now. Worth running the numbers with your pharmacy.

UPDATE: Called Anthem and fought through three levels of customer service. Got some surprisingly good news:

1. My plan DOES have a specialty copay max of $350/month — it was buried in a rider my HR added. The $500 quote was wrong.
2. Applied for the PAN Foundation — they're currently closed for obesity meds but I signed up for alerts.
3. My doctor is writing me a bridge prescription for compounded semaglutide through Empower at $199/month while we work on the copay situation.
4. Also going to re-enroll in the Novo savings card — apparently you can get a new card each calendar year if you re-register. My 24-fill count resets in January 2027.

Between the $199 compounded bridge and the $350 specialty copay max (which I didn't even know about), this is way more manageable. Still expensive but not "$500 surprise at the pharmacy counter" territory. Lesson learned: READ YOUR FULL PLAN DOCUMENTS.
